The story takes place at the end of the 19th century in the high society of Manhattan. In the first book the main characters are two sisters: Elizabeth and Diana Holland, there's also Penelope Hayes who's scheming behind her best friend's back (Elizabeth Holland) in other to marry her fiancé Henry Shoonmaker who is in love whith Diana Holland. But the story gets more complicated and a lot of other characters appear later on. 
They are my favourite books because the story's athomosphere is quite similar to one of my favourite shows Gossip Girl: a lot of scandals, gossips, fake rumors, rivalry and complicated romance.I also like the way the author tells the story. You never know what will happen next and the way things turn out in the end never are the way you thought they will be.
It has a lot of success in the United States so I hope there will soon be a movie adapted from it.
